2. Different Meanings Of Family
To some, family means mom, dad and the kids. To others, family means single parents doing the job of two to make a home. To some, family means living with grandparents too. To others, family is the aunt or uncle who has stepped up to fill in for parents. To some, family means two moms or two dads growing a family together. To others, family means two people multiplying their love through adoption. To some, family is limited to blood relations. To others, family includes friends who are there through thick and thin. To some, family is all about the people in their lives. To others, pets are considered family members too. 4. My Dad
Ever since I was little you were right by my side. Even though it may not always have been the right decision you were always along for the ride. I never realized how important you were to me until I left home. Now my eyes light up every time that you call my phone. You and mom were so young when I came. I can’t even imagine how things must have changed. You weren’t like other young dads who get up and walk out. You stayed by our side without a doubt. I am so much like you in everything that you do. I have always been like that even as a little girl too. I remember getting up early and going to work with you all day. No matter how boring it was with you I would stay. It sucks that it took moving out to see how much you meant to me. It’s amazing how much it made me open my eyes and see. If anything ever happened to you I don’t know what I would do. How I truly feel is one thing I have never told you. All little kids have that one person they look up to. That one person that can do no wrong no matter what they do. 7. A Daughter Who Leaves
A woman weaves her daughter’s wedding slippers that will carry her steps into a new life. The mother weeps alone into her jeweled sewing box, slips red thread around its spool, the same she used to stitch her daughter’s first silk jacket embroidered with turtles that would bring luck, long life. She remembers all the steps taken by her daughter’s unbound quick feet: dancing on the stones of the yard among yellow butterflies and white breasted sparrows. And she grew, legs strong body long, mind independent. Now she captures all eyes with her hair combed smooth and her hips gently swaying like bamboo. 9. I Have Much Less To Be Thankful For
This Thanksgiving I have much less to be thankful for. Much less than I did just one year before. When I lost Mom, I lost my mother and my best friend. I had no idea how sick she was or that her life would end. Four months later I lost my dad as well. This Thanksgiving I’m living in Hell. But I am thankful to still have my brother. The divorced mother and her divorcing daughter. The about-to-be ex-son-in-law and the ex-husband’s adopted son. The divorcing daughter’s child, who is the step-nephew of the ex-husband’s adopted son. Everyone cordial: the ex-husband’s second wife friendly to the first wife, warm to the divorcing daughter’s child’s great-grandmother, who was herself long ago divorced. Everyone grown used to the idea of divorce. Almost everyone has separated from the landscape of a childhood. Collections of people in cities are divorced from clean air and stars. Toddlers in day care are parted from working parents, schoolchildren from the assumption of unbloodied daylong safety. Old people die apart from all they’ve gathered over time, and in strange beds. Adults grow estranged from a God evidently divorced from History; most are cut off from their own histories, each of which waits like a child left at day care. What if you turned back for a moment and put your arms around yours? Yes, you might be late for work; No, your history doesn’t smell sweet like a toddler’s head. But look at those small round wrists, that short-legged, comical walk. Caress your history – who else will? Promise to come back later. As his son was to start school, Dad wrote poems everyday. The poems turned into a cap, a satchel, textbooks, crayons and a small umbrella. On the first day of April, his son went with Mom, through the town full of cherry blossoms, to the People’s School in an old castle, to attend its first grade entrance ceremony. Their grandmother kept dropping things. “Drat!”, She’d tipped the peelings in the billycan. “Now Mam, you stay put in that chair,” Their grandfather heaped pine-cones on the fire; And made some bubble and squeak with cheese and sauce, While they played Snakes and Ladders on the floor.
